TRIP: Top Chef at Sea cruise entertainment


We had a neat program today at sea. Celebrity cruises partnered with Bravo's Top Chef series. They've been showing a season of Top Chef at sea. And today's program had an audience participation.

My wife was egging me on to put my name in the hat, but I'm not one to get on the stage. The host came on and introduced his co-host, the ship's executive Chef.

This event was dubbed a quickfire challenge. Contestants were chosen from the audience and paired together in two groups of two. They were set to complete three challenges: 1) squeeze a bunch of oranges and fill a glass, 2) separate six eggs (where the last was a hard boiled egg as a prank) and 3) whisk the egg whites until they are stiff and hold it over your partner's head for five seconds without anything dropping on them.

The winning team was divided in two and paired with the sous chef of the premium restaurants "Oceanliner" and "Blu". Pictured above with the flambe is Chef Vijay from Blu.

They had audience judges, they scored points according to the 1) dishnames "Ricard-Lo (something something something)" and the "Blu -MOO" (Blu Moo won the contest because "a fifty year old can't remember the Ricard-Lo name because it's too long", their words not mine folks). 2)Presentation 3) taste. It turned out to be a pretty close contest with team Blu-Moo winning.

Anyhow I wanted to showcase an example of the type of entertainment they feature on the cruise. At night we have variety shows, musicians, karoke, dancing, and live music all over the ship. They keep you well entertained on the boat.

In my opinion you should jump at this type of opportunity if it ever presents itself again.

we'll see :) I didn't know what they were expecting us to do up there but I guess if they were calling up any random passenger it couldn't have been that hard right?

This is actually a post that's been sitting in the queue for quite some time. A while back we had a Taiwanese potluck where everyone brought a food favorite from Taiwan. TRIP: London 2013 Pt1

Ok more traveling, this time to London, first week for work (above is our view of Buckingham Palace from our office) and second week for vacation with my wife. Lots of pictures of a lot of different food, I've manage to cut the number of photos to the highlights of what and where we ate. Sorry in advance about some of the photos I shot everything using a Galaxy S3 mini android phone that I acquired while on this trip and it does a pretty good job, but under low light it gets a bit grainy. A Taiwanese wedding banquet

So one of the reasons for returning to Taiwan was to celebrate my Sister's wedding with my extended family in Taiwan. As you may have noticed food is a very central theme in Asian culture. What's that title picture got to do with it? Nothing. Actually that's a picture of the rock we were suppose to climb but got rained out. We did manage a nice hike, but I'm sure that was a poor replacement for my brother in-law who was looking forward to the climb. Anyhow it just seemed like a nice picture to lead us into "The Banquet", I'm not making light of the title, 13 courses of food with no fillers. That's right no rice, no "extra carbs" just lots and lots of food.  Ok there's 13 courses, no need for a lot of my yammering it'll be like the last post.  Small plate appetizers to start us off.
